THE AWARD WINNING DEVON - ASBAH
THE Oxford Guardian is pleased to introduce the deserving recipients of the
"Specialist Accommodation of the Year Award" as Devon - ASBAH.
The Devon Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (DASBAH) was set up in January 2001. The main purpose of the Association is to provide help and advice to people with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus, and their families.
The Association is run by a management committee of up to eleven people nearly all of whom are affected in one way or another by Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus which means that the Associate members are able to call on their own experiences as well as a great deal of professional information to provide advice and support.
HOBURNE HOLIDAY PARK
Devon - ASBAH's Caravan situated on Hoburne Holiday Park, Paignton, Devon, provides wheelchair accessible accommodation enabling visitors to have an enjoyable holiday in one of the most picturesque areas of the UK.
The site is maintained to a very high standard and benefits from panoramic views over Torbay and out to sea. The holiday park is served by the number 12 bus service, which are wheelchair accessible and run from Brixham to Torquay via Paignton bus station. Car hire and Taxi services are also readily available to offer wheelchair friendly transport.
The Hoburne site has its own licensed club with season long entertainment, satellite television, family bar – providing hot and cold snacks and a takeaway service. Also on-site is situated a launderette and hire shop catering for residents essential needs. Entertainment for all the family is provided through, an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room and a heated outdoor swimming pool - younger people are kept busy by an indoor soft play area, an adventure playground, the amusement arcade and the crazy golf facilities - whereas, older generations can enjoy a frame of pool or snooker.
The caravan itself is a very spacious, all electric, 12 feet wide by 32 feet long with a veranda. It is well designed and takes people with mobility problems into great consideration with it's wide doorways and spacious living and dining areas.
Features of the caravan include:
- All work-surfaces, sink, cooker are of an average height.
- All internal doorways are extra wide and fitted with sliding doors.
- There are two separate sets of external double doors giving wide access to the caravan.
- The main bedroom has two single beds, one on each side of the caravan giving maximum space for wheelchairs to be manoeuvred about. The smaller bedroom is fitted with a single bed and an upper bunk.
- The shower room is fitted with a wet floor which allows wheelchair users to move about freely.
- There is sufficient room for an average size wheelchair to fit.
Outside the caravan is a parking block, the space at the bottom of the ramp leading up to the caravan has been designated as a disabled parking bay for use by the occupants of the caravan.
